I needed a round topped side table. I don’t know why, I tried square but it didn’t work. The rest was just a natural progression from there. I have also modified the design since making this prototypes to make them a little more durable and have the flexibly to choose from different shelf materials including fabric, hemp webbing and slatted timber shelves.

These tables pose a significant challenge though. The perceived value of a side table is very low compared to say a dining room table. Sure they use a lot less material but the joinery here is just as complicated if not more. The only way these could be commercially viable is if they were batch produced in considerate volume with the right machines, tooling, setup and jigs. Luckily they don’t take up too much space.
All that said I still pursued this design with the goal of designing a table that is light, elegant, provides a space to hold a glass, a book and a pair of spectacles.
